John Hersey’s long form Hiroshima first appeared in an issue of The New Yorker. It was the first time in the publication’s history that it was devoted to a single piece of journalism. It is one of the most remarkable pieces of nonfiction I have ever read, and one of the very, very few books I would honestly claim ought to be read by everyone. I have blogged about it here, and it can be bought here, and probably before too long, it will feature in one of our still-to-be-finalised prescriptions.
